Midwest Rugby Referee Society
The Midwest Rugby Referee Society (MWRRS) is a territorial referee society serving the Midwest Rugby Football Union region. Its role is to support and coordinate with Local Referee Organizations (LROs), rather than directly own or manage individual referees. Through this structure, MWRRS helps ensure that rugby competitions across the Midwest have access to match officials who are properly trained, certified, and prepared for the level of play they are assigned to referee.
MWRRS aids its member LROs through referee training, education, development, and the identification of talented officials. A central part of its mission is to help referees progress beyond local appointments by developing those with strong potential for higher-level competition. Referees who demonstrate exceptional ability may be promoted to the Midwest Referee Panel, with some being prepared for national-level opportunities through USA Rugby pathways.
Local Referee Organizations remain responsible for the local referee base in their geographic areas. These organizations recruit, certify, train, retain, and develop referees to meet the needs of the rugby clubs they support. MWRRS works with these LROs to strengthen referee coverage across the territory and to provide a development pathway for officials who are ready to take on more demanding assignments.
At the discretion of the Midwest Rugby Union, MWRRS also appoints referees to higher-level and special competitions where local organizations may not have officials available at the required level. These assignments may include Level 4 matches such as Men’s Division I fixtures, selected playoff matches, Thunderbird Cup matches, and Midwest 7s Series qualifiers. In this way, MWRRS helps maintain consistent officiating standards for important competitions while also supporting referee growth throughout the Midwest.
